Firestone tires okay?
#1
Surprisingly few options in this region... How are Firestone's tires?

Toyota dealer's quote on Dunlops is competitive on tire-price, but then adds $400 for additional parts and labor.

Firestone's quote is $300 cheaper for house-brand including all of their various fees, and they claim to have a treadwear rating of 640 on their tires, which is more than 2.5 times greater than the Dunlops.

TIA!

I buy Bridgestones at Firestone. There is usually some sort of deal where they supposedly give you a hundred dollars off or back. Pretty much a continuous promotion.

Careful they don't use an off brand or older stock on your car. They may try to sell you those because, I'm guessing, the profit margins are greater.

Tire Rack sells Firestone and you can read reviews there. I know the Winterforce model is a good tire for snow, for example.

Firestone on everything.

They had some bad press years ago when the overweight Ford Exploder ran them and thus the name "Ford Exploder".

The rubber stays BLACK and they channel water really well.

I buy my tires at Costco, maybe it’s not the greatest deal but they rotate and balance for free. I have seen other places offer this service but they seem to push alignment which they charge for and don’t do it properly. If I want to get my wheels aligned I go to a dealer or good shop.

One thing I learned back in the day, know what you are asking g for.
I purchased a used car that had very hard long life tread, sounded like a
'70's Ford 4WD truck rolling down the road. Bought new tires, complained
about the loud, wanted quiet. Tires were very quiet, but the soft tread wore out
in less than 30,000 miles.
Now I better explain about the compromise between tread life and quiet balance.

Tiangou,

The whole issue with Firestone tires was _way_ exaggerated. It affected Firestone ATX, ATX II, and Wilderness AT on Ford Explorers between 1990 and 2000. Other models in that time frame had no issues. I'd even go as far to say that some Firestone models were actually excellent tires even at that time frame.

I had Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires on a '96 Ford Crown Victoria and they were some of the best tires I've ever had on a car. We have Firestone tires on my wife's '07 Yaris. I forget the model but they were excellent. We're about to replace them not because of poor performance or worn tread but due to general wear and tear and age. Not sure which tires this time 'round.

Since the Firestone models that are on the Yaris have been since discontinued, I'll go through the research process to determine which is the right brand and model for the car this time. Last year, I replaced the Contitech Crosscontact LX20 tires I had on my '09 CX-7 with models from Pirelli. Very similar characteristics to the current version of the Contitech tires (which were also great choices for the vehicle) but much less money. They've been excellent.

Have you done your homework on which specific make and model tire is best suited for your vehicle, weather conditions and driving style? If not, then definitely do it before you finalize your decision. While W tire from Dunlop or Firestone is good for X car, in Y environment for Z driver, it may not be the best choice for your vehicle, where you live and your driving style. To take it a step further, X model from Dunlop or Firestone in Y size doesn't mean the same tire in a different size will offer equivalent performance on the same or a different car.

I guess what I'm saying is don't be afraid of Firestone tires at all. If Firestone models are the right choice for your vehicle, go for them.

How much more are Michelins?

Also look at the date code on the tire to see how long they have been sitting in the back room.

I'm still suffering from PTSD from the Firestone 500 catastrophe in the late 70s. Can't bring myself to even consider them.
