error when trying to move DVD files

I should have clarified. I was using the DVD Player app/program on the Mini, not a physical DVD Player.

Understood, both the macOS DVD Player App and the stand alone hardware box will try to plough through several corrupt bytes and play and play... if the error is too bad, it will eventually give up.

Did you try my suggestion to copy the files to another location on the same hard drive?

Or can you rip a fresh copy?

Can't rip a fresh copy as I no longer have the DVD. I'm in the middle of a Handbrake conversion at the moment. After that finishes, I'll check it out and if it works, I'll just convert them that way as it will definitely take up less space. If it fails, I'll try your suggestion of copying onto the same drive. Thanks.

Well, Hanbrake just finished one of them, but I forgot to select subtitles again. Damn. Trying another, making sure it's selected. The previous one converted the nearly 6GB VIDEO_TS to a 704MB mp4 file, so that will definitely save me some room if I decide to convert all of these things. Still takes about 40 minutes for the conversion. I guess it really is a good excuse to just take a close look at what I really want to save and otherwise just delete them.

At this point I don't see what's to gain by copying the actual VIDEO_TS folder onto the same drive as the original. Even if it does it successfully, I'll still want to convert to a smaller file.

none. I use HB for all DVD ripping. Works fast and the films always playback. I also have forgotten subs on more than one occasion. Annoying.

I use Fast 720p MP4.

Well, this is rather embarrassing. For the hell of it (yeah, I should have checked first) I did a Get Info on both external drives and a couple of the Permissions were set to Read Only. I changed everything to Read and Write, dragged a folder over from one drive to the other and it worked without the error. Just checked the resulting file and it plays fine. D'oh!

I still may weed out a few movies I no longer care about, but for now at least this simple fix seems to have worked.
