50 years on death row - he is proven innocent
#1
Tommy Zieglar was sentenced to Florida's death row in 1975. He had been found guilty of killing his wife, her parents, and a customer inside the family furniture store. Zieglar was shot in the stomach but the prosecution said it was self-inflicted.

In late 2022, a judge granted Zeigler and his defense team new DNA testing. The results have just been released and showed that Zeiglar was not the killer. Results showed that the customer who was killed was one of the killers.

Zieglar, now 79, has spent the past 50 years inside a 6' x 9' cell, Prison rules were changed in 2022 to allow inmates outside their cells for six hours per week, previously it was limited to one hour per week.

A hearing will be scheduled to ask the courts for his release from prison. He will receive the standard $100 all Florida inmates receive upon release. Any further compensation requires a special allotment approved by the state legislature.

So tragic. At least he wasn't put to death, but sometimes you wonder what's worse, 50 years in a cell or a painful death?

In some states, prisoners like this receive reparations for the time served. In Florida, I doubt this will happen.

in Florida he probably cannot vote and may have other legal issues to overcome, if ever...

A gofundme should be organized now.

Yeah, there’s no way to compensate him, but big bucks wouldn’t hurt. Hopefully he found a way to live a meaningful life while in prison.

Damn. That's sad. Can't imagine what that would be like—mixed feelings and all. I hope he gets some financial and psycholical help. Glad for him, though.

Upon reading the linked article, in Florida he may not even get a hearing based on this evidence.
