The health secretary has suggested allowing the virus to spread, so as to identify birds that may be immune. Such an experiment would be disastrous, scientists say...
All I can say is that I'm glad that idiot isn't in any position of authority.

The bird flu works its way through a flock FAST…doing what the idiot suggests doesn’t produce any chickens with immunity. They all die.

Read an article today about how this is a US problem, other countries are not as affected. There is no egg shortage in Canada. The difference is Egg Farms there may have 10,000 hens but they have a lot of farms, they are also more enclosed due to the weather Here we don't have as many farms but they have a million birds. Are farms are also more open to the elements.
So an infection there takes out a small number of birds having little effect on the overall. Here a few farms getting infected have a major effect.
In other words - industrial farming is to blame.
This time it was chickens, but next time it could be corn or wheat. Both crops are GMO'ed to be very similar across strains. So a blight hitting either could destroy entire harvests across the country.

There are some benefits to living in the country.
'I've been buying local eggs from a small organic farm nearby for the past 2 years, around $8,50 a dozen delivered to my door every two weeks.
Worth every dime. Healthier, beautiful, fluffy. Would not go back to grocery eggs.
Our neighborhood farm store can't keep chicks in stock because so many people want to raise their own hens now.
I also only get poultry and (rarely buy it) pork or beef that is raised sustainably and processed in my area.
Back to nature is the way.
Factory farming is horrifying.
