Garage door opener and the totaled car

Go ahead and erase/re-pair. In my opinion, though, the odds of that scenario happening is infinitesimally small. How would your VIN lead them to your address, unless they have access to DMV computers?

It's more likely that something left in the car might help them identify you. When I go to junk yards there's an amazing amount of stuff in cars. Money too, all that change that fell between the seats.

Another time to reset the garage opener pairings is when you buy a new house. You may receive all of the remotes from the previous owner but there could have been cars that were programmed.

Good point, although not something I worry about the previous owners here. We still get mail for them and they stop by to pick it up occasionally. nice and friendly people. Plus they are friends with the former neighbors.
