Mine lost two in quick succession, too: a 1gb Shuffle bought days after they came out, and a personalized Nano the very day it came out.

At which point I just smiled wanly and say "I'm sorry, I'm not in the iPod business any more."

She did indeed buy a refurb Shuffle on her own dime and has held on to it somehow.
