Clearly these people lack a basic understanding of both physics and math.

Netflix has been really annoying to me for the past couple months. I'm being punished for watching too many movies.
They haven't slowed me down, just stopped sending me really popular titles.

I hadn't really noticed until reading this. I'm the same as you jim, new stuff never comes to me. The last new thing I got was Batman Begins. I even have a Netflix facility an hour from me. Looking back over the last month it does seem that they are spreading my rentals out to the tune of three a week (seven days).

Blockbuster Online is faster in my experience. I usually get about 5 or so a week.

The little-known practice, called "throttling" by critics, means Netflix customers who pay the same price for the same service are often treated differently, depending on their rental patterns.
I don't know that I'd call it "little-known". Do a search for netflix over at the fatwallet forums.
