Verizon FiOS help.
#1
Hello,
I just converted from Comcast to Verizon FiOS. Installation completed an hour ago. The tech did nothing on the computer only setup the router (which is fine by me) and had no paperwork either. I simply plugged in the computer and connected - as I suspected. But the email wasn't setup (obviously). So I ran out and asked the tech for the site address to set it up. I return, enter the url which auto downloads a dmg. Mount that and run the 'Verizon FiOS Internet Service Installation'. It asks questions and sets up a primary email account, yada yada. Finishes up and closes. So I open Mail only to find that my primary Comast account (which is still active) has been deleted along with a couple thousand emails, several dozen of which were important! I wish I had a chance to just set it up manually - I should have called CS for info instead of using the GD installation program.
Has this happened to anyone? Is there a way to reverse it (I haven't closed out Mail yet or restarted or anything)? Am I doomed (or just stupid)? Oh and yes I did have a backup, but to make a long story short, I don't any longer. This is a new drive, new system, clean install on everything, I haven't imported mp3s, photos, or anything other than my email. Once the email was set I made room on the other drive for other 'stuff' erasing my backup email. I was going to back up the entire new drive when I completed the other imports...

Sounds to me like the emails are only deleted from your Mac; perhaps they are still on Comcast's server? Not sure, but if you can still log on to your Comcast account, you might be able to re-download them.

No, there were thousands of emails. Several years worth. I have it set up to delete emails from the server after a week. Sad

Whew, sorry. Hopefully, there will be something you can do. I had a similar experience recently, so I can sympathize... hard drive failure.

update: I jumped the gun. While the accont information was deleted from Mail preferences, the actual files are still intact in the Library/Mail/ directory A simple import has fixed everything. Smile

I didn't have any such installation programs when I switched--not sure what those would be--I just changed my outgoing mail server setting in Mail and off I went.

Glad you recuperated anyhow.

The problem, jim, is that I never had the chance to change the settings manually. I was simply trying to create the master account (with Verizon - online) and it changed Mail without a prompt. Anyway, it's resolved and hopefully no one else will encounter the same.

>I was simply trying to create the master account

I don't know what that "master account" is--Verizon is never a part of my life (online or off) except during that time of month (bill paying). Maybe it's something my installers did for me?

Are you on a PC, wolf? My guys said there was a welcome kit with some CD that was Windows-only, so I said no-thanks.
