I was just wondering the difference between G3 and G4 mhz.
Is a 400mhz sawtooth faster than a 450 mhz blue and white?

for altivec aware apps, the G4 will kill it.
For other apps, virtually identical. You'll see it RIPping mp3s, etc. You won't see it with Word, etc.

for altivec aware apps, the G4 will process @75% faster at the same MHz. (in those machines)

I think OS X may have some altivec optimization built in as well. You can get much faster G4 processor upgrades for the Sawtooth, if you are so inclined to pop in a new processor. Also, FireWire booting is possible on the Sawtooth, not so much on the Blue and White.
What computer are you using now? A rev 2 Blue and White? I must have missed, or simply forgotten, the upgrade news. Nathan

Not just AltiVec, or my favorite name, the Velocity Engine, the G4 is much faster than the G3 on several levels.
As everyone has said, AltiVec aware apps. But, not only apps, OSX is AltiVec aware. But hardware improvements make the G4 a screamer, read all about it.: http://www.mackido.com/Hardware/G4.html BGnR Damn your fast Nathan. As mentioned, no B&W FireWire booting, the FW is not on the motherboard, it is a card. The coolest thing about the SawTooth is that you can stuff in six hard drives in the case, and it has three firewire buses, two external, one internal. Created when there was still hope of factory firewire drives, way before the the HD guys stole firewire and dumbed it down to create SATA.

Racer,
I just said what you said. What the hell is wrong with you? Is that all you can do is quote me? Are you some kind of fat, stalking, gun toting, Mexico visiting, Buick-driving moron who has nothing better to do than follow me around the forum and parrot back my words? Get a life you gun-maniac, lunatic, full-time employed, married to a real woman, lunatic LOSER! (the comments expressed above could be construed to be harrassment. They are, in fact, the opinions of rgG, and cannot be used without the expressed written consent of rgG or Major League Baseball.)

but my twig and berries are intact....
and I used numbers.....you know how actual numbers throw people off here. I went from a B&W G3/450 with a gig o ram, and put in a G4/500 zif. QT compression sped up @80%. so subtract the 10% clock increase, and you are around 70+% faster as for the parrot, it crapped on my shoulder.....that didn't go so well.

Hey, why did I get dragged into this? If there is any insulting of RacerX I'll be more than happy to do it myself, thank you Mr. Poo.
BTW, RacerX, you need to change shirts it seems you have bird doo on your shoulder. ![]()

SO even a B & W can be effectively souped up with a G4 zif.

It's my backbone machine. A Smurf with a G4/450 in it (actually a G4/400 upclocked) that I've used since 2002, and am using now to dupe data DVDs while I'm on the Mini (which only has a combo drive).
There will likely even be some serious power coming around with upgrades for the ZIFs any day/week/month now, because the Moto 7448 is in production. These are 1MB cache G4s (on chip at full clock) that suck a mere 10 watts at 2GHz. These are the G4s everyone waited so long for, and Moto couldn't get out the door. They will take on a G5 at about 90% performance, at equal clock speeds, underl OS X. Although I'd much rather have a Sawtooth or above - for other reasons (video, dual capable, more RAM), 1GB of RAM and a 2GHz G4 in a machine that is already improved with the PCI card for the HDs, a DVD-r (and the above RAM), makes buying a Mini a tough choice because of the $$ you'll need to get it to the same level. Where else can you stuff 4 HDs and an optical, that RAM and get dependable ops for $500? My only issue is that there is, indeed, something screwy with my machine and data to the HDs, and I don't know where it is, so I'm slowly moving toward FW and keeping my eyes open for a new box. It doesn't seem to matter whether the data is via PCI or motherboard bus. Disappointing because of the vast amounts of data/music I move back and forth, but probably not even noticable by someone using it for Word, surfing and email. Plus, the box itself is absolute cherry. Then again, so is audio equipment I bought back in 1978. |
