1 Ghz Dual - few signs of life, what to try next?
#1
A friend of mine found a dual 1Ghz quicksilver machine on the curb. We're pressed the cuda button, reset the pram, but we're not even getting an image on the monitor....no startup chime either. Any ideas what else to try? Further, any ideas which part might have failed? Is it processor or motherboard? It seems to get power just fine - can power a portable firewire drive.

What do you have at your disposal to test with?

(Spare video cards, RAM, maybe a complete Digital Audio or Quicksilver G4, a spare processor and heatsink?)

I might as well form the line.. if you can't manage to revive it, I'd sure be interested in some parts from it. Processor and heatsink first, and other parts if they're available.. I might even buy the whole machine, if you didn't want to much for it.

Plug in headphones and verify that the speaker isn't just unhooked.

Unhook all IDE cables and startup. See if that helps.

Try a different video card.

Different RAM, or at least different configurations.

PRAM Reset frequently.

Reseat the processor, adding new thermal paste.

Report back.

eh, its not that great of a find...a decent deal if you have some money to invest.

I tried a AGP and a PCI video card. No image with either.

Headphone verify the lack of startup chime.

I tried reseating the ram.

It doesn't even appear to do a PRAM reset, although i frequently fondled the cuda button.

hm, maybe reseating the processor is a good idea.

can the 1 Ghz dual processor be put in other quicksilver machines?

Yes, the processor can be put in other quicksilvers. It can also be put in Digital Audio G4s (which is why I'm interested in it).

How much RAM is in it? Tried with different configurations, or none at all? (To see if it'll fail the POST and give a beep).

we only have one 512MB chip to try in it. Hm, I don't think I tried it without any ram but i'm certain that i never heard it beep.

someone in his office is selling a 800mhz quicksilver for $300-400. I might just tell him to buy that machine and try moving the processor over.

Still, the only curb candy I've ever found was a 9600 350mhz. Not a bad machine, but finding a QS dual 1ghz!!!!!!!!

Did you try pulling the pram battery unpluging the machine and hitting the start button until you stop hearing the switch click and then letting it sit for 12 hours trick?

It brought my Beige back to life.

What Guitarman said.

And maybe a new PRAM battery?
