Back when i lived in Oregon the James D Blaine Society (named after a Maine senator whose main distinction was he never visited Oregon) was floating an idea to shoot every third tourist as a way to maintain the purity of the state. I think they were tongue in cheek.
Be careful crossing the border is all I'm saying.

[quote Paul F.] "THE 405"
I've heard "the 405" before. With I-5, at least there is only one. With 405, there are at least two. They should really be saying "a 405" (if they have to add something to it.)

I agree. Our 405 has nothing to do with the southern 405 yet they carry the same federal designation.

In California you won't hit the coast using 101 until you get to Eureka.
If you're going slow, spend the night at Benbow, great old fashioned hotel on the Redwood Highway (101). Or stop for a drink.
Prairie Creek State Park, Richardson Grove State Park, Humboldt Redwoods State Park are great places to see groves of big redwoods.
Samoa Cook House in Eureka is unique, lumberjack food.

It's shorthand that conveys the message. Isn't that the purpose of language?
Just be thankful you aren't going from Washington to Boston; that's a wicked awful route to navigate and once you get to Boston, everything you ever learned about driving is instantly disproven.

So it's just like New Jersey then?

Clearly you've never driven in Boston. After diving though in, around or within the gravitational pull of Boston, New Jersey is like a trip down a Utah Interstate.

I've heard a bit about Boston. From what I've heard, I think I'd like it.

been to Boston for a day. Enjoyed what i saw and experienced. I was with a local, so that helped. A friend's business is based there, and he has a 2 million dollar condo at the harbor. Great base to explore from.
Every time they talk about the monorail fiasco here in Seattle, I just mumble "Big Dig"
