Poll: evolving audio//video formats vs. your music/movie collection

How many of you had large record (LP) collections that you ended up mostly duplicating/replacing when CDs took over?

Can you stomach doing it all again (or afford to) when the next Latest and Greatest Format comes along?

I got to thinking about this when someone suggested here recently that we would all be tossing out our plain old DVDs in favor of HD versions.

I can't imagine another round of "upgrades" for my large music collection or even for my tiny video collection. I'm not even replacing my VHS tapes, with a few exceptions.

It annoys me. I replaced nearly all of my LPs and cassettes with CDs over time. However, that was because I wanted to the superior sound quality as well as a medium that is far less likely to wear out. Same goes for videos. The stuff I can't replace on DVD such as home videos and recordings of old TV shows have long since been converted to DVD via my DVD recorder.

I will not replace anything I have on CD or DVD until the formats are no longer supported and/or something newer is truly worth the money. HD isn't enough. Heck, they'll probably have to go HD and 3D before I'll start the replacement process again - lol!

Now that I have Netflix, it's rare that I ever buy a movie.

Who could be such an idiot?

Don't toss your DVDs (I donated most of my LPs to public radio). But it's certainly natural to factor in the evolution of HD when considering the purchase of a bunch of NEW titles in a format that's nearing the end of its supremacy.

BTW, LP to CD is a good analogy for DVD to HDDVD--I'm not sure the next music format change will be so compelling... what will that be? Diskless?

I have a large LP and 45 collection as well as a good amount of CDs, some of which duplicate the records, for the usual reasons.

I still have a nice turntable and still listen to vinyl, as sonically, some CDs are inferior to the original LPs or can't reproduce the obvious "mood" you get off of the original vinyl.

Speaking for myself, I've never seen a reason to discard old technology simply because something new or "better" comes along. If there's a practical reason, like space considerations, OK, I can see it.

Hence, I have a Teac 3340S sitting next to my ProTools, which sits next to a Tascam MS16. There's also an iPod next to the turntable, CD and DVD players, DAT, PCM F1 and cassette machines.

It's all good at my casa. (except for 8 track)

I'm getting fed up with the whole thing. I've got a few albums on vinyl and cassette and CD.

I refuse to replace my currently owned VHS movies with DVD except for a few that have really enticing extra features. To me, watching a movie at home is like watching TV, and I don't feel like being forced into spending money to upgrade the "quality" of my TV when it doesn't even matter all that much to me.

i only duplicated a few things on CD that are in my LP collection. same w/DVD & VHS.

i sometimes mull the vinyl collection - will my daughter appreciate my taste in music? will she want to be bothered with LPs and singles? i'm in no rush to get rid of them, i'll find out down the road, i guess.

I'm in NO hurry to get any HD-level DVD media or players. Regular DVDs look great, and I've got my handy-dandy HD Tivo ready for "new" HD content. Quite happy to let the format war play itself out before I even think about replacing anything.

I can't think of 10 discs out of my 200+ DVD collection that I'd bother buying "upgraded" versions of.

I have over 800 vinyls in storage. Transferring to CD seems too daunting a task. I want a bigger place and maybe just play them as vinyl. Of course since I have lived without them for nearly ten years means maybe it's not worthwhile to do anything but sell them. Of course the Root Boy Slim and Sex Change Band lp's stay forever.

When I go and buy some of them again on CD they just don't sound as good as I remember. I got some real odd stuff. Anybody remember when Boston the city was going to be the next San Francisco? Beacon Street Union, Phluph and Ultimate Spinach? I got em all and they were all bad.
