Please School me on This Topic ....
Are some better than others? Is PNY any good? Do some work better for Movie Modes on Cameras like the Canon S2 IS. What is the cheapest price for good 1 gig and 2 gig cards?

I've had a PNY 1GB in a Dell Axim x50v for almost two years with no issues. A PNY 2GB in an x51v for nearly a year with no issues.
I've used their CF, and "computer" memory/RAM before too with no issues. A good, quality brand at a (typically) cheaper price. Seems like J&R usually sell that brand cheaper than most. Can't recall right now though.

I just bought two PNY 2 GB SD 150x from newEgg, I think $34 each. It should ship soon. Last time I bought a PNY 512 MB SD card was in fact a TOSHIBA.

Best prices on ebay, unless you're willing to do rebates--in which case you can get 1GB for as little as $15 delivered.
Speed needs depend on what you're going to use it for--I'm just doing mp3s on my Palm... For what you're doing, higher speed is better.

knock on wood, my AData card has been rock solid...used it at least 300+ times to transfer pictures from my D50 to my USB card reader....

Unless you are pounding out a lot of consecutive frames you won;t need the ultra high speed cards such as 80x or 133x.

PNY is a good brand, I have used them for RAM and such. Patriot is also another good "off-brand." I have their 2gb SD card ordered from NewEgg back in June and no problems -- and this is after going to World Cup and taking some 600 stills/vids on my Pana Lumix TZ-!.
It is not super-duper fast like some, but faster than the normal speed which is good enough for me. But then, I shop in the "value" bracket. (Good and relatively inexpensive.) For video, you want a card that is something beyond the normal SD card speed. For something that's going to do mostly vid, I'd go ahead and buy what are among the fastest out there. Costco is running a deal right now on Ultra II (high-speed) SD cards. You may be able to find them cheaper elsewhere, I dunno. But nobody beats Costco return policy. I gave $58.99 for my Patriot 2gb card, less a $20 rebate. So that --$39 -- is a darn, darn good price on a 2gb faster-than-normal SD card. You can kind of read the reviews in places like Newegg and glean which ones are junk and which are not. It's like anything else...you'll pay more for the name brand than the other brand. But just b/c some company doesn't have a marketing budget doesn't necessarily mean they're not up to snuff. This from a marketing guy. FWIW. Good luck, and enjoy!

Almost all SD cards (and all memory cards), especially the brands like "Patriot", "PNY" and so forth are not "real" brands at all.
They are comprised of components bid upon and purchased at lowest market prices from various wholesale sources, then assembled in Chinese factories and a label stuck on. PNY, Kingston, aData, Patriot, they mean nothing. The label is the name of the aggregator. Cards assembled on the same day might have one batch with Toshiba flash memory, another batch with Samsung. Even Sandisk and the other top brands have wildly different components in the same model depending on the day it was assembled. What the brand names MIGHT represent are varying levels of quality control and/or acceptance of out-of-tolerance chips, though I doubt even this makes much of a difference. If you like the specs, and the vendor allows returns for out of the box defective, buy the cheapest you can find and forget the brand name. |
