I've been self-employed as an independant contractor since 1992. It's not for the faint of heart.

Depends on your industry and your level of contacts. And whether or not people value your work.

What morlock said.

But you should also weigh how unhappy you are and why against the reality that all jobs can and do suck some days. Self-employed included.

Never let yourself get trapped in a job that is killing you though. Letting your spirit die in a dead end job is a mortal sin. Even if you have to borrow money or do something else less soul deadning for a a bit to get by, it is worth it.

I have faced this three times over the past 30 years in between long periods of self-employment as a freelancer (again, read what Morlock said). In each case it was good job gone bad when management changed. All three became so horrible my health began to suffer. I quit two of those with not job in hand.

But I had confidence that I can always do something else to make a living. If you have that confidence and are patient, it can work.

Again, ask yourself why you want to quit. If your reasons are sound (your significant other may or may not be able to help you determine this) enough and you have confidence and a plan of what to do next, you will be ok.

Good luck.

In the '70's and '80's it was the thing to do in SoCal, you could walk out of an aerospace job in the morning, go to another firm and be working that afternoon, with a raise. Our assemblers would bounce around from firm to firm getting raises all the time.
Lockheed would steal our workers all the time, it was really tough to work at the Skunk Works at the time because of the composites they were building the F-117 with. Lockheed had huge turnover because of folks getting vey ill. In fact they polluted the water table, one of the major reasons the left for Georgia.
Best thing I ever did was come to California.

Been self employed for 27 years. 24/7 and constant money worries. Just because you don't like your boss is no reason to go down this road. You better like sales and being humble.
