Audio Question: Going from Vinyl to Digital
#11
You don't need an iMic. I've found that the Mac's audio in works fine, and I've played my stuff over some pretty big systems. Just go from the amplifiers line out to your Mac's audio-in. Do you have recording software? I use Spin Doctor. I also never clean up my audio. My vinyl is in good condition, and I actually like an occasional click or pop. Do a few test recordings where you experiment with the bass. For me I start by zeroing out the treble, mid, and bass. Then I knock the bass down a few dBs. Before I did that I was getting some pretty muddy recordings. Take the tests and play them on a few different players and find what sounds best. I found that listening in a car, and listening on ipod headphones are good tests.

I like to record to AIFF. Then I burn the complete CD for an archive copy. The cd is also good to rip your mp3's from. Most of the time iTunes will be able to find track info if it's a whole album.

A turntable's signal needs to be amplified compared to a line signal. I believe the iMic can accommodate the turntable's signal, but it doesn't have a ground. You would still need to attach the turntable's ground wire to the amplifier, so the iMic is sort of redundant.

I like her "Fiddle With The Volume" song the best. Her label isn't doing a good job promoting her. She also had a breakdown at her LA show:

I'm sure it's all a tremendous whirlwind for her. Being a 40-something fan of hers makes me want to jam her up about smoking. She's really talented. I like that song too.

She reminds me of TLC's late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes. Her raps are generally removed from most of their radio cuts, but they have a very similar flow. May Left Eye rest in peace because I loved her lot. I worked on some of TLC's very early videos in Atlanta.

No, it doesn't. Marvelous, innit?

Mac-A-Matic: you really should check out the iMic, you appear to believe that it needs a pre-amp but I assure you it doesn't. Getting an all-digital signal from the get-go works wonders.

How will an iMic improve Mac-A-matic's situation? It's never going to be an all-digital signal. And you still have to ground the turntable.

I have an Onkyo MSE-U33HB, a nice inexpensive USB device that lets you hook up your stereo to your computer. You might be able to find one on eBay.
