I'm sort of stuck here. I've just sold something on eBay for the first time and the buyer has sent payment through Paypal which is all well and good.
It lists "File, Type, To/From, Name/Email/Phone, Amount, Date, Status, Details, Action". There is a little button underneath "Action" which says "Accept". I hit that and it brings me to a page under the heading "Accept Credit or Debit Card Payments" which basically asks me to upgrade to Premiere account. I don't want to do that but there's no other option.
Am I stuck or what?

You either accept and upgrade to premier... or you deny and require they send eCheck or Bank Transfer.
At that point they can turn you over to Ebay/Paypal for not wanting to be raped by fees.
Or... they can sympathize and pay another way.

You can't deny CC payments made to personal accounts anymore. You can let it sit unclaimed for 30 days, at which point it'll be refunded to the buyer, but that'll end up with you getting negged by a ticked off buyer.

You may want to ask JJ. I think that at one point he had his account downgraded after upgrading it to accept a payment. I remember him saying something like they will only do that once. If you upgrade you will be charged a fee for every payment you receive. Credit card or not. When I sell things on ebay I make it clear that I accept paypal but only bank transfers. No credit cards of debit cards. The first time I sold something I didn't say that and found out i'd have to upgrade I emailed the guy and explained to him I did not take credit cards and he'd have to do a bank transfer and he didn't mind at all. Maybe you can try the same. Or at the least try to get paypal to downgrade your account and then explain in your auctions that you do not take credit cards.

Was that rule always in effect? I used to have a "Premier" account but I dumped it because I had connected it to my checking account, and I decided I didn't want them to have any access to my bank accounts. I thought II was able to accept credit card payments without that, but it's been so long that I could easily be mistaken.
They used to try to drive people into "upgrading" by restricting how much they could spend to a fairly small amount.
