TV on in background: sometimes something jumps out at ya

I agree.

But for me that also applies to most music, most of the time. I really enjoy music and tend to dislike the "background" application of it.

There are some times when I have it take a seat *slightly* in the back, but only out of necessity.
Ah, but then that's the whole point of ambient music, innit? Not to be "listened" to, just intended to colour the environment. Hard to grasp just reading about it, till you've stood in a cathedral.

The TV is usually on in the background with the sound muted when I'm home.
Since this is the norm, I find that I truly appreciate & enjoy those times when the house is silent. Since I live next to the Birmingham airport it's never really silent, but sometimes seems so without TV or music playing.

As far as phrases that jump out at you, I remember vividly the 1st time I heard the term "fresh-dressed woman." WTF?
