But the thumb drive doesn't have a USB logo.
Do you EVER remember which way USB cable goes in?

[quote Mr Downtown]But the thumb drive doesn't have a USB logo. usually has a brand logo on one side - mine do anyway before they rub off from carrying them in my pocket.

I look at the split in the USB metal plug. It is opposite the logo and easier for me to see. Shoot, I have never noticed the logo on the plug until this thread! heh. For horizontal slots, the split goes down (which would be logo up). Never seen one otherwise. For vertical slots, I try to memorize them on machines that I use a lot. The vertical slot on the fromt of my PMac needs the slopt toward the right. (top to the left).

...my wife would never read this board anyway.
Got her an iSight, so she can videoconference with our kids when they're away at college. One day she says its not working. iChat doesn't seem to see it at all. So I check the cable connection. She's managed to stuff the 6-pin Firewire cable end into the ethernet socket on the side of her iBook. Crooked. I laughed about that one. She thinks it's not fair- she _did_ plug it in- why do they have all of those sockets there anyway?

At least you can't put them in backwards like I've done with a firewire connector on a cheap drive case.

On my iMac 400 DV SE, the2 USB ports on the side have the logo going on the bottom. The Macally iKey keyboard has the logo to go on top.

I still think that putting the logo up will result in the correct position on more than 50% of the devices.

Who cares if one can be right 50% of the time?
That's still a PITA. I've seen four different combinations, and particularly on USB drives, there is barely a majority on the "standard". And not all USB cables follow the same reasoning. Not a major problem, but an annoyance that doesn't have to be. |
