2.5" SATA FW400 (or FW/USB2) enclosure
#1
Does such a thing exist?

I've tried the usual search engines, and perhaps I'm not phrasing my query right, but mostly I get EITHER:

1. 2.5" SATA USB2 enclosures (which I'll settle for if I absolutely have to) OR
2. 2.5" IDE USB2/FW enclosures OR
3. 3.5" enclosures of various types that just won't do at all.

What I want to do: replace my MacBook's 80GB SATA 2.5" drive with a 160", and use the 80GB in an external case for backups etc.

Any leads much appreciated!

I had an WD Passport 120 GB (USB only) that would work on iBook but not on PowerBook (not enough power though the USB port). rather than fooling around with a dual USB cable (one that sucks power from 2 USB ports), I moved the drive to this case and now it works great via FireWire (I have not tried the USB ports).

Which remind me, I should put the empty WD case on CL or eBay.

Edit: sorry, my mistake. You need SATA, I thought you will take either 1, 2 or 3 of the options you list.

We will have an excellent, rock solid SATA 2.5" USB2 solution sometime in the next month priced very economically.

Our FireWire solution offers FireWire 800 support with 800 to 400 cable + USB 2.0 port too.

Why no FW400 only? Well - have to use the Oxford 924 chipset (ok.. we won't use a non-oxford solution we've tested so far that was crap) for the SATA HD support and it supports FW800... Replacing the FW800 ports with FW400 ports would affect cost by maybe a dollar or so - so still wouldn't make it cheaper - may as well give you the FW800 function as base.

Larry, the enclosure you link to it's shipping "same day", are you saying that next month you will have a cheaper one? Thanks

The enclosure being linked to is FW800/400+USB2 supported Ox924 based.

The cheaper option next month will be a USB 2.0 only model.. no FireWire 400/800 interface on it.

That's USB only.

Granted the Google deal made it sweet - but - we sell the drive by itself for $100 with 3yr Warranty vs. the 1yr warranty that comes with that external - which you void when entirely when you open it up.

Given the lack of warranty - I personally didn't find that deal attractive. And again - it only offers USB if you just wanted it for external.

I jumped on that deal for the160G drive, changed my mind 5min later, and Buy said "too bad".

It's coming via USPS so refusing delivery will be no problem.

I ordered a miniStack v2 box, and will order that SATA 2.5" enclosure referenced above. FW800 is no big deal to me, but since it's there, what the heck.
