stop spotlight

Is there a way to stop spotlight? I'm trying to some UNIX ninja file stuff with my home folder and I think I may have stepped in to circular loop with spotlight. It seems to be copying the index files recurrsively and it is causing some problems. Is there anyway to temporarily stop Spotlight?

you can turn it off on a per-volume basis
