The first ipod impressed me until the $499 price was announced. My interest stopped instantly. "Ill get one when they cost $150." I almost made it. Bought my first at about $180.
I phone looks like a great thingy. I'll get one when they're $150.
Not that I'm "upset". I had no yearnings or expectations (although I'm FLOORED that there was no iLife '07 announcement). It's just that right now, I can think of 100s of things that I'd rather do with $600.

A horizontal iPod w/hi-def screen ala PSP would have been the cats azz.

Put away $100 a month.
In six months, you can buy the first one, easy.

I thought it was $299 with a 2 year agreement?
The phone is nice. But it's not with Sprint so I can't use it. The user interface is nice, but I'd like to not be locked into "mousing" around. I'd like to click through the interface too. But I can't confirm it's usefulness until I try it out. I think I'm most interested in the internet part of the thing.

I think you are wrong this time. The ipod was a very expensive product in a market that didn't really exist previously.
I don't get the whole cellphone thing, generally, but it seems to me that many people seem to get excited by their cellphone, and want the latest and greatest features, and this convergence of a cellphone and an ipod, with internet features, may be very attractive to them, and not really any more in price then buying a fancy cellphone and an ipod.
the success of this product will be determined by actual experience though. If it is durable and easy to use and doesn't crash or have problems, it will be a success.

If I wasn't on this Q for another 9 months and it was available today I would get it even though Cingular coverage is awful here.

I will buy the thing and just use it as a wifi thingy for surfing the web.
(if it works that way.)

Yup..
Right there with you...
It's not that I don't think it's new, innovative, very cool, and probably very useful to a lot of people.
But it's not something I need.
I don't own a cell phone. I don't WANT a cell phone. Sure, it would be nice to have maybe a total of 2-3 times a month... but hauling the stupid thing around, keeping it charged, paying for the service, etc is more trouble than it's worth to me.
I said much the same about an iPod. I finally got a free iPod Mini on an equipment rebate deal... and guess what? I was right.. I don't use it much. I LIKE it... but it's just not in my habit pattern to use it.
I suspect the iPhone will be much the same...
I'll probably eventually get one when the price comes down drammatically...
Then not use it as much as I thought I would.
I'll wait for the 3rd or 4th generation iPhone.
