What NAS devices are recommended?
LaCie has afp built in which is a must but I'e had a lot of bad experiences with LaCie drives failing.
Infrant sounds great but its overkill and too expensive.
Any other recommendations?

Well..
I have the LaCie at home... 500gb.
So far it's worked quite well. It's NOT fast.. but it was easy to configure, fairly quiet, and seems to work just fine.
If I needed a faster drive, the reviews seem to indicate that the Infrant is the one to beat. A lot more $$$ than the LaCie, however.
In my searching, I found no other drive as inexpensive as the LaCie that SPECIFICALLY advertised Mac support and native AFP volume support (rather than just telling how to connect to an SMB volume on the Mac...).

could you just share a drive through one mac rather than NAS?

I built my own. Used old Pentium 3 + mobo from eBay ($35) some RAM ($40), generic case ($35), a boot drive ($10), gigabit card ($10), HD controllers ($12 each) and drives (as much as you want to pay), plus freenas (freenas.org). Works great, and includes AFP.
