target disk mode question
#1
I have connected my G5 to my G4 via firewire cable. I reboot the G4 holding down the "T" key (on the G4 keyboard). And poof, the G4 just shuts down. I power it back up, it starts to boot, I hold down the T key again, and it shuts down. Am I doing something wrong?

Have you disconnected all other FW peripherals from the G4? And is the G4 at least an AGP model (PCI graphics G4 cannot use TDM)?

Other things to check:
The HOST computer is up and NOT using any other FW devices.
The target Mac is NOT using a wireless keyboard.
6-pin to 6-pin FW400 connection/cable.

Try re-booting the target Mac AFTER using: SysPref > Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode

The following models can be used as target computers:

* iMac (Slot Loading) with Firmware version 2.4 or later
* iMac (Summer 2000) and all models introduced after July 2000
* eMac (all models)
* Mac mini (all models)
* Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) with ATA drive
* Power Mac G4 Cube
* Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) and all models introduced after July 2000
* Power Mac G5 (all models)
* iBook (FireWire) and all models introduced after September 2000
* MacBook (all models)
* PowerBook G3 (FireWire)
* PowerBook G4 (all models)
* MacBook Pro (all models)

I think I've seen this before, is it an MDD G4 with two ATA buses? I think Target Disk Mode will only show one drive, the Master position on the rear ATA bus (where Apple put the hard drive from the factory), and if there is no drive there, it will shut down.

Yeah, if it's an AGP G4 what's the hard drive situation? I've got SATA drives (only) in my Sawtooth and it does the same thing when trying to boot into TDM.

What are you trying to accomplish? Any reason your G5 can't be the target machine?

1. Check and make sure you are running the lastest firmware for your machine. If this is a Sawtooth G4 it is important because the firmware that shipped had poor TDM support.

2. If this is a new HD. Make sure that the jumper on the HD is set to master. Also make sure that the HD is plugged into the last connector on the cable. Alternatively, set the jumper to CS and put the HD on the last connector on the cable.

StingMe: TDM on the sawtooth only works when you have a drive connected to the master connector on the primary IDE cable. So SATA or any third party card support. The G5s are a lot better than the G4s at this. The G5s will share out both hard drives and the optical drive via TDM.

Did you mean to say "So
SATA or any third party card support"? If so, that's what I figured.

BTW - I can confirm that G4 iBooks also share both the hard drive and optical drive in TDM...I've used DVD installer discs with some of my off-lease G4 iBooks (CD-ROM drives) via another iBook G4 equipped with a combo drive (booted into TDM). I didn't realize that G4 towers wouldn't do that.

That sounds like it. It is indeed a MDD G4 with 2 ATA busses.

And the reason for not using the G5? Its just easier. Everything is connected to the G5. All my apps are running etc. The G4 is empty and running solo. I guess I just need to set the jumper to Master than. I'm pretty sure its CS now.

If it's cable select, you shouldn' t need to change jumpers, just make sure that it's connected to the Master (Black) connector, and then Cable Select will make it Master.
