Now here's a link from Canon USA's promo email that led to a blank page. This can't be spam, can it?

There must be some other explanation why I constantly get these blank pages when I click on links from a variety of sources. Here's an example of what should be a "trusted" source, Canon USA. http://altfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/ck/1080-...41-0?ck=29 This was from a link in an email from Canon that said, "Trouble viewing or clicking on the links? Please CLICK HERE to view the web version."

I'm really perplexed because despite previous comments about my problem, I definitely feel this must be due to some kind of problem with a software setting or something else on my computer.

I'm looking for new ideas.

That blank page should have sent you to Canon's site. It's a redirect that should have been so fast you never saw the blank page. Look at the source for the blank page. But it's not spam, it is from Canon.

Safari 2 ?

This MDD with 2.0.4 (419.3)version of Safari doesn't like vendor sites.
Just vendor sites. News, weather and forums are A-OK.
Will often get "server not found" pages. Really bad at Costco.com. Every third page.
Odd thing is, it did it with 10.3 and updating to 10.4 the weirdness continues.
Makes absolutely no sense and yet there it is.
Also have other browsers on this which works fine.


You've tried 'new link opens in new window' rather than in new tab or other options ?

First, let me say that I'm glad to find that, as I thought, this wasn't spam.

I'm using Safari 3 and just downloaded Firefox the other day to double check whether the problem was just in Safari. It's not.

I just recently downloaded Onyx and ran all of its maintenance routines.

This is so frustrating. I've missed out on a number of deals when the links ended up like this one and I couldn't find a link to the same deal otherwise.

I have to find a way to fix this problem. At least I know that the links are good for some people, so the problem lies with my computer.

I suggest you start a new thread in order to get all the symptoms of your problem written down in one place. As I recall, you were also experiencing beach balls in your browser, which you attributed to speed of your internet connection. Even the slow speed you listed is 1.5 GB/s. A page like this might be 200 KB so in theory it should take less than a quarter second to transfer the data for this entire page. I don't think your connection or router are slowing you down. You also said you have a 2.66 GHz MacPro with 5 GB of RAM. With that much horsepower and a fast connection like you have, your browsing should be smoking fast. It appears that for some reason redirects aren't working for you. That is why you are getting this problem and the Redir0.1.html.gif 1x1 pixel problem as well. Are you using saft by chance?

When you start a new thread:
1. give a descriptive subject stating that you need help
2. give a short description of your setup including computer model, amount of ram, and system software version
3. list the problems that you are having and a brief history of what you have unsuccessfully tried so far, give us some of the links that you are having problems with as well
4. give us any clues that you have as to when this started- did you install any software, add any peripherals, etc.

Until then, try these steps one at a time and see if they help:

1. Dump your cookies.

2. Clear your DNS cache. Open terminal and type lookupd -flushcache

3. Get rid of any input managers that you have. They are evil as far as I am concerned. see here: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?stor...6084331828

4. This really sounds like it could be java related so make sure java and javascript are turned on, then close your browsers and move the following files out of your preferences folder into an empty folder somewhere, but don't delete them just yet:

com.apple.java.util.prefs.plist
com.apple.plugin.settings.java.plist

5.. Create a new user, login and see if you are having the same problems.

If he has his browser set to not accept cookies, could this be because the browser won't let altfarm.mediaplex.com accept its cookie and the redirect can't happen?

If you Google altfarm.mediaplex.com you see a lot of complaints from eBay users about this same thing happening, although I see no solutions.

Conversely, what about removing the mediaplex cookie and trying the link again? Maybe the cookie's presence is screwing things up.

I'm just wildly guessing here.
