I have connected my G5 to my G4 via firewire cable. I reboot the G4 holding down the "T" key (on the G4 keyboard). And poof, the G4 just shuts down. I power it back up, it starts to boot, I hold down the T key again, and it shuts down. Am I doing something wrong?

Have you disconnected all other FW peripherals from the G4? And is the G4 at least an AGP model (PCI graphics G4 cannot use TDM)?

I think I've seen this before, is it an MDD G4 with two ATA buses? I think Target Disk Mode will only show one drive, the Master position on the rear ATA bus (where Apple put the hard drive from the factory), and if there is no drive there, it will shut down.

Yeah, if it's an AGP G4 what's the hard drive situation? I've got SATA drives (only) in my Sawtooth and it does the same thing when trying to boot into TDM.
What are you trying to accomplish? Any reason your G5 can't be the target machine?

1. Check and make sure you are running the lastest firmware for your machine. If this is a Sawtooth G4 it is important because the firmware that shipped had poor TDM support.
2. If this is a new HD. Make sure that the jumper on the HD is set to master. Also make sure that the HD is plugged into the last connector on the cable. Alternatively, set the jumper to CS and put the HD on the last connector on the cable.
StingMe: TDM on the sawtooth only works when you have a drive connected to the master connector on the primary IDE cable. So SATA or any third party card support. The G5s are a lot better than the G4s at this. The G5s will share out both hard drives and the optical drive via TDM.
