Need Help-Electrical Converter for Europe
#1
Wife is going to England on Saturday and I need to get her something so she can use her hair dryer and laptop. Here's the kicker...it has to be from Amazon.com so we can get it guaranteed by friday (for free since we have prime). Radio Shack would also be good, if I could pick up in store. I do not want to go to BB or CC due to crowds. Smile

I looked and I dont really know what I am looking for.

TIA

check the laptop, it may be already 100-240V, in which case you only need a plug adapter (not a transformer).

hair drier requires lot of power, usually 1000-1200 W. Where is she staying? Don't they provide a hair drier? this way she won't have to carry unnecessary weight.

She is staying at Ghyll Manor in England. She has a Toshiba craptop that states 100-240v for input. What type of adapter would I need for this?

I found this: http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-33117-I..._1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1196213586&sr=8-1

It seems like it would work for the laptop. She will also be traveling to India, and possibly some other countries. This might be a good way to go since it covers 150 countries. I just need to make sure this is what we need.

As for the hair dryer, I'm thinking of telling her to just buy a cheapo over in England.

Thanks for the quick reply!

yeah, that looks cool, namebrand, all in one, not dirt cheap but reasonable.

As for the hair drier, most hotels provide one, if not in the room, just ask at the reception desk. But the chance to have one in the room is 99.9%

if she insists on taking the hair-dryer along:

carrying a hair drier is daft in my view.
most hotels have them in the bathrooms or hidden away in strange drawers - I'm writing from a hotel outside London and they have it in a drawer near the tea/coffee maker. if there isn't one in the room then reception will give you one. most people I know don't use things regularly anyway I have to admit.

I have never seen a laptop yet in my life that didn't have a 110-240v (+/-) powerpack. You can pick up the socket adaptors in any airport for $7-$12 when you arrive.

I got a socket adaptor in Radio Shack last year. It wasn't more than $15.

You are overdoing it.
This, $1, is the plug/socket adapter that will do the job. for the laptop.

She could pick up a cheap hair dryer in Europe, which, with the present exchange, may not be the best choice,
or buy a cheap, dual voltage hair dryer, here. The last one, I bought for my daughter, for her trip, was about $19.....

Thanks for all the tips. We settled on the kensington one since it will wor in lots of other countries. As for the hair dryer, I told her to deal with it at the hotel.

You can get a dual voltage hair dryer at Wally World for 9.95 - it will run fine with the plug adaptor you are getting for the computer.

But, do check with the hotel first - if they have one, no need to bring one along.
