New battery for G3 iBook-Advice, please
#1
I've decided to hang onto my G3 iBook until Macworld, and see what's announced there. But in the meantime, I need a new battery for it, for a cross-country flight. So I can get a Newer Tech battery from our gracious hosts for about $95, or I found this one (made with Japanese lithium ion cells) on eBay for $62.

Any reason not to go for the eBay one? I have other uses for that $30.....

Good price. If warranty holds water best deal I have seen. However do you need it for a month and a half? How bad is your present one?

As someone who has bought an off-brand 'chinese' battery for my clamshell from an LEMswap source... and then had it do nothing at all, I'd say that $30 will save you the $65. YMMV, but bad batteries are the most common problems these days. Reduce your risk. You're gonna be sitting for four hours anyway.

Alternatively skip buying the battery altogether and bring paper and pencil.

99.5% positive on 30K sales0--that looks pretty safe to me.

Pencil and paper--LOL!

What Airline and do they have Power Ports. American Airlines has 12 Volt DC Car-Lighter type ports and I've seen people using a small 12dc->110ac inverter (around $20) and their normal AC adapter to power a laptop for the entire flight. Check http://www.seatguru.com to see where/if there are power ports.

If you plan on continuing using iBook in future new battery may make sense. The bad battery risk is epidemic. Bought two replacement cellphone batteries from overseas and they both were gyp deals. Would only buy this stuff from B & M stores I am sure I can return merchandise to.

How long do you expect new battery to power iBook? Even when new my charge did not last more than a couple hours.

Battery has a 1 year warranty, company has been on ebay for 6 years. If I can get 2.5 hours out of each battery (the old one can stretch that far with the screen cranked down), that will last me between stopovers--I got a cheap fare, but it's Kelowna BC to Calgary to JFK to DCA, so it's a l-o-n-g day.

I certainly have not regretted getting the Newer Tech replacement battery for my G3 iBook 500 MHz. You pay your money and take your chances. Good luck.

don't want to jinx things around here, minty, but what pray-tell did you do w/ your new iBook batts to only get a couple of hours out of 'em? constant disc burning, copying, powering external goodies; usb light, fan, etc., all at the same time?
