I really wonder if the issue is other than color management?

I'm using what I consider, a higher end consumer printer, a Canon ip8500, and a Canon 20D. I would think that there should be no problem with compatibility between these two products, yet I can't seem to get a "normal" print without some heavy duty lightening.

As far as I can tell, for other people, printing a straight, unedited photo usually produces a fairly decent, if not perfect print. If I try such a print, it always appears way darker than what I see on my screen.

It seems that some other factor may be causing this variation from the screen image. I'm wondering if, somehow, a setting for either the printer or the camera is way off.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your thoughts,

It's probable that the default gamma setting for the printer is what's screwing you up.

Does your printer dialog have a selection of gamma-settings? I use an Epson and the gamma option is listed under Color Management in the print dialog.

How are you printing the photos?

Through your computer? What program?

I have the iP6000D, which is a notch below the 8500 (six ink tanks instead of eight.) I have the same problem getting a print to match my display, and I finally had to resort to buying a Spyder for monitor calibration. If there are any settings in the Canon printing software for gamma, I've never found them. Software is one area in which Epson continues to outshine both Canon and HP.

MacMagus, like AlphaDog, I don't know anything about a Gamma setting in the Canon Printing software or even if there is one. Somebody?

bik, I have used CS2 previously, but I haven't installed it yet on my newly installed Leopard volume. For now, I've been using iPhoto v. 6.0.6.

This is really frustrating, since my S/O is printing on her ip4300 without this issue on her Intel Mini using Kodak EasyShare software to do minor editing on photos taken with her Canon S3.

I am so bummed out by this. Sad

I haven't been using any version of an Adobe photo editing app for a while. I do have CS2, but haven't reinstalled it and I can't afford to upgrade to CS3, anyway.

The image from the top link looked fine, but what am I supposed to do with it?

Thanks for taking an interest, pixelzombie, but can you offer any other thoughts that might help me?

Happy Holidays!
