closeout from BestBuy:
2.16ghz MBP 160gb HD, SD, 1gb RAM.
No disks, no box, no a/c charger, just the MBP
Purchased and returned several times since Nov 2006
Apple will change the date of purchase so there is a one year warranty.
IMPORTANT: case is bent slightly where someone tried to remove the kensington lock but can be hammered back and it seems to work okay otherwise. Case hase some scratches on the bottom.
Price $1100
Is this a good deal or should I wait until new models come out and the price of the refurb 2.16 MBP drop below $1499

I'd wait on that. Is it one of the core duos that can only take 2 gigs of RAM?
Just over a year ago (last january) I got the same deal on a 2 ghz CD at CompUSA (open box, return, etc - mine came with all the original parts & box though).
I've been quite happy with it since I paid $1100 a year ago and could get nearly that price for it now on Ebay.
But, having said that, I'm already outgrowing my mbp and I'd like to buy a new, more powerful one - one which can take 4 gigs of ram.
IF the computer were in perfect condition (with box, etc), then I'd say maybe.

Did you hear that directly from Apple, or were you just told that by Best Buy? Unless it was directly from Apple, I would assume that there is no warranty at all. And also if there is evidence of physical damage like you mentioned, Apple might not honor a warranty either.

That's a good point. When I bought mine, Apple would not adjust the purchase date for my mbp - luckily, their records indicated it had only been purchased a few months prior to when I bought it...but still.
It's not a given that Apple will change the date. You can ask them to & fax them the records (like I did), but it's still up to them to make the determination.

That sucks. You buy a computer from an authorized Apple retailer, the retailer says it was one year warranty, Apple says "Sorry". This should be a problem between Apple and the retailer, not between consumer and Apple. If they retailer does not tell the truth to consumers, they don't deserve to be an Apple retailer.

This is a USED computer, that had been sold several times, and first sold more than 1 year ago. Used computer salesmen are no different than used car salesmen. Best Buy does not have a good history of being knowledgeable of Apple's products or policies.
Apple's written warranty http://images.apple.com/legal/warranty/d...rranty.pdf says:
"for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of retail purchase by the original end user", so what BB is saying contradicts Apple's written policy, since it was first sold to the original end user back in November 2006, and then returned, and is now being sold as "USED". Maybe Apple will make an exception, but I wouldn't take BB's word for it, they don't make Apple's policy decisions.

It's a Core2Duo and Apple already said they will change the date of purchase upon receipt of the FAX.
Does this change anyones mind as to whether it's a good deal? Is it s a better deal for $900?

No, I still don't think it's a good deal. IF it had the box, dvds, adapter...then maybe. For me the deal breaker is the condition - since it's not "like new" condition, I wouldn't do it.
Funny that Apple said they'd change the date for you, but for mine, they wouldn't (and I faxed them the same documentation they've told you to fax).
In fact, because I seem to save everything, I have the email from them right here:

So, it would seem that if THEY ever sent it to Apple to be worked on, Apple won't change the date for you. Can you get the serial #, call Apple and verify that it's never been sent in for work/support?

$900 is a better deal; AND have 'em give you a fresh AppleCare for it, too, so you know you'll get at least three good years out of it, or a replacement machine should it fail... good luck.
