Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player - new $79 - great upconversion
#1
Toshiba HD-A3 high definition DVD player.... I went to a variety of stores yesterday and finally found new sealed box units for $79.99 at CompUSA. Most retailers were selling this unit a few weeks ago for $299 but since BlueRay won the HD wars, the prices have dropped. Many folks are saying, since BlueRay prices are so high and will be for a couple of years, the HD-DVD is a great choice in the interim and even later on because if nothing else, they are wonderful upconverters for standard DVDs.... that's my plan for use with my big screen TV. This particular model gets impressive user comments at Amazon and Circuit City. A great buy at $79.99.

Circuit City did have one sealed new one in stock for $99.99 and one open box for $49.99. That open box would be a steal. Supposedly CC is accepting returns for HD-DVD players, so their many stores may have great prices on open box.

FWIW... did you know CompUSA is continuing business with TigerDirect as the parent company?

. . .the supply for the Toshiba HD DVD players is drying up (unless they are returning them to manufacturer). . .they were everywhere and now most places are sold out. . .even on the cheap models. . .getting harder to find. . .

CC had the A30 in-store plenty of inventory, now all gone in-store. . .

I bought one too at costco now a couple of weeks ago. It is slow to boot up and load a disk. But otherwise it seems to play really nicely. Not sure I can see a difference between this one and the other upconverter I bought (first, plan to return), but maybe I can.

Last night though it choked on a couple of my old home movies burned to DVD. It plays the more recent ones. Not sure if that is media related or what, but that is my only current complaint about it as a player. The same dvds play on my old DVD player, the other upconverted, and my imac.

I joined blockbuster also to rent HD-DVDs while they last. You may want to check that out.

I put the wrong side of the Hd/DVD hybrid in it and could not believe how bad it looked.Much worse than Oppo.
