Also check other things that you might have bought at the same time. I also got $7.50 back on VMWare Fustion and $4.50 on .Mac Family pack due to price drops on those too.

how come they still have stock? I though that Steve was pretty good at making sure the channel inventory was almost empty when Apple releases new models

There seems to be quite a large supply of them. The Apple Online Store still has them in the Clearance Section (New, not Refurb) for $1699 and $1899, and the 17" for $2499.
It's only the Matte screen, no Glossy option available.
I suspect that there is quite a bit of motivation to get rid of them before this quarter/month ends.

1699 + TAX? LOL, I like the amazon price better, $25 cheaper, 150 rebate, and no TAX. Let's see:
Apple: 1699 + 7% tax= 1,818
Amazon: 1675 -150= 1,525
OK, that's almost 300 bucks (293 to be exact).

The Amazon price is better than the Apple Refurb price for the 2.2GHz
Apple Refurb: $1449 + 7% tax = $1550 vs Amazon $1525.

I just saw a local Apple reserller/retailer drop their prices on the previous generation. It made little sense to buy the previous generation when for just a bit more you could get the latest and greatest. For example, up here in Canada, before this latest price drop you could buy the previous generation for:
1799 for the 2.2
1999 for the 2.4
The new generation is going for:
2099 for the 2.4
2599 for the 2.5
So, for just an extra 100, you're getting a great machine in the 2.4.
With the price drop of the 2.2 to 1699 and the 2.4 to 1899, it makes a bit more sense now. The fact that it's a month since the new generation came out and that there are still prev gen machines out there seems to indicate that there are a lot of them out there.

The old 2.4 model has a 4MB L2 cache, while the new 2.4 model has a 3MB L2 cache, so the old (cheaper) model will perform better. It also comes with the Apple Remote, which is a $20 option on the new one.
The new 2.5 model has a 6MB L2 cache and will perform much better, but costs $2500.
