I have a project that calls for burning DVDs on the spot. Otherwise, I would be considering a Dell Mini9. A $999 Macbook is more than I want to pay right now. Plus, it seems Macbooks with a Superdrive are $1100 or more lots of times.

Apple refurb store has the DVD burner for the MacBook Air @ $79. USB powered.

You could always go with an external USB DVD burner. I bought an LG slim DVD burner for my OSX Hackintosh (MSI Wind) for $40 (open box) at BB about a month ago. Works great with Windows and OSX.

Will this burner work with any Mac or just the Air?
Only works with the Air. There was a big hoopla when it was released (alongside the Air) and people realized that it ONLY worked with the Air.
Has something to do with the USB power requirement being much higher than found in other Apple laptops and non-Apple laptops.

Biggest problem with all 'slim format' notebook burners is speed.
2.4X for a DL or 8X for a DVD, and those are maximum not actual burning speeds.
