Is there a cheap OSX hackable laptop with DVD burner?
#1
I have a project that calls for burning DVDs on the spot. Otherwise, I would be considering a Dell Mini9. A $999 Macbook is more than I want to pay right now. Plus, it seems Macbooks with a Superdrive are $1100 or more lots of times.

None of the Netbooks come with a DVD burner from what I have seen.

This was the cheapest dual core Intel based notebook in a quick search. $450 after two $50 rebates. It is a closeout with very limited availability.

You could always go with an external USB DVD burner. I bought an LG slim DVD burner for my OSX Hackintosh (MSI Wind) for $40 (open box) at BB about a month ago. Works great with Windows and OSX.

Will this burner work with any Mac or just the Air?

Only works with the Air. There was a big hoopla when it was released (alongside the Air) and people realized that it ONLY worked with the Air.

Has something to do with the USB power requirement being much higher than found in other Apple laptops and non-Apple laptops.

Dell Vostro 1510 or Inspiron 1525 Both run about $499 every so often. Current deal is on a Dell Vostro 1510 for $519 with a DVD-R Drive Plus tax. See Here: http://dealnews.com/Dell-Vostro-1510-Cor...75745.html

Biggest problem with all 'slim format' notebook burners is speed.
2.4X for a DL or 8X for a DVD, and those are maximum not actual burning speeds.

Another good way to limit your market for an item there Apple. I've got
this big huge OWC burner and I thought hey that ones nice and sleek,
no Apple burner for you, next question.
