off Craigslist for $350. Probably not the BEST price used but it's practically new, not a mark on it.

Stoked as I've got a TON of Macro stuff I've been dying to shoot!

awesome lens. I have a Sigma EX 105 that I use with my Nikon gear, and it beats the pants off the 55mm that I also have. Can't get any light in there if you are just 2" away! Also as a 2.8, that rocks.

Is the canon 1:1 at max?

Yep 1:1 but don't know if you can get any better with one of the extension tubes. I don't think I'd ever need anything more than 1:1 though.

you can get magnification, but you loose light pretty fast, and need to get closer. It's what is known as bellows extension factor on view cameras.

My nikon 55 3.5s are 1:2, and have a matched tube for 1:1. The Sigma 105 is 1:1 by itself. AF is slow. but at macro, you should MF and probably use a tripod, or at least a monopod or rest of some sort. Also, on a tripod, use timer and/or mirror lock up functions to minimize any camera shake. It really shows up with macro shots.

That Canon is a great lens. 1:1, quick focusing and a great all around portrait lens.

do you have a DX or FX camera? I find that using a 55m macro with a DX camera is not bad. I have also used the 105mm (Nikkors) with the DX and it is nice as well but I have been preferring the 55mm

mrbigstuff, I shoot with my original 1D, so it's only a 1.3x crop factor.

decay: I've shot with that lens; it's INSANE! I lust for it!

decay, I don't know much about the standard 50mm lenses but I've read that if you're in the market for a 50mm, and you can put up with a non-USM lens and a slower aperture the 50mm macro renders some amazing images (much lower CA and flare compared to the other 50mm lenses).
