Daughter is going off to college and is taking advantage of Apple's largesse and got a MacBook 2.4Ghz. I ordered 4GB of RAM from Larry and a hard drive kit [a 200GB 7200RPM drive]
So, my question is: Is it worth it to take out the 160GB 5400 rpm drive that came w/ the MB and put in the 200GB 7200rpm???
If so, will it be straightforward? i.e., take out drive, put in new, run the install disks on new drive and erase "old" one???
Thanks for any suggestions.

its pretty straight forward yes -- you didnt get the 320 gig drive from OWC? think its like $90 after rebate
surprisingly, some of the larger 5400 rpm drives are as fast as the smaller 7200 rpm drives
depending on what shes doing, more space might be way better than more speed (something she may never see?)

changing out the drive is easy peasy.
The hardest part is removing the screws from the drive sled. They are small.
I did the exact thing on my MacBook about a month ago. I went with a larger 5400 rpm drive because like jdc said, it was just as fast as some of the 7200 rpm drives. I maxed out the RAM for less than $100.
You end up with a very snappy laptop.

Then buy a case for the drive you removed so she will be able to use it for backups!

Abe, it sounds as if replacing the hard drive in a MacBook is way easier than it was in my new donated PowerBook. That's really great! I'm sure your daughter must be thrilled.
