Am I whistling Dixie for a telephoto digital non-SLR?
#1
I feel I may want a telephoto for an african trip. I currently use a Coolpix Nikon S5 & S6. I really like them but don't I need something more for Africa? Any help appreciated. PS: I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for the camera, either (asking too much?)

Well, Africa IS quite large.

I'm partial to Panasonic's Lumix TZ (travel zoom) cameras. The current model is (I believe) the TZ7, but the TZ5 at $220ish might be a good fit for you. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011Z4...ef?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1246207806&sr=8-1

There are longer zooms available for sure, but this is much more compact than the 15, 18, 20x pseudo SLRs.

My brother has had very good pix from his Olympus SP-565 (currently around $250). It is surprising how small it is. Although this camera uses XD cards it also has an adapter for micro SD. It also uses AA batteries which can be nice for a world traveler for rechargeables and off the shelf back-ups . With a 20x zoom you can still get up close without getting gnoshed. It is a bit slow on start up.

waiting from some older guy to come in and question whether samintx is really going to Africa, whether she has an iPod touch or not, and who knows what else.

this is going to be fun
