You can go down to the courthouse and to your state hall of records and look it up. Some of the stuff is even available online. If you knew where JoeH lives, you could look up the value of his house online. A child support deadbeat list is available online in most states. Anyone can do it. Political operatives on both sides have been looking up dirt for decades--i.e. Richard M. Nixon (Helen Gahagan Douglas, Edmund Muskie et. al.).

Yes, Obama answered his question, whether people like the answer is another subject altogether.

No, Joe the Plumber is not a spokesman for anyone, and McCain is an idiot for keeping that guy in the headlines. McCain should be focusing on the question asked and stop talking about the person who asked it.

My point is, it could have been a Muppet asking the question and it shouldn't have mattered. The question and answer is what people should be focused on, not who asked it.

As Gutenberg already has pointed out, all you have to do is go to the local property records office. Traditionally in many areas it was located at the county court house, though in larger metropolitan areas it might be separate. In Mass. they are called Registry of Deeds. I can't even ask the current Registrar to hide my record, and I used to work with him and we are on friendly terms. One of his election promises was to get them online, the local Registry is a bit behind the times on that. But the town's Assessors office does have the property assessments for all personal and business properties online already.

As for other records that are public, if I gave you my last name you could find out what I earned last year by going to the Boston Herald web site. That is because I work for a state university and my earnings, as well as all other state employees is a matter of public record. The Herald just filed a suit to be given the records completely in machine readable form so they could show them on their site. Before that, you would have had to go to individual state departments and other offices and examine paper records in person.

There are many other public records that anyone can examine. Better than half of all information investigators, public or private, may look for about a person initially is public. In the case of hiring a private investigator, what you get is the knowledge of where to look. You could go and get the same information, it would just take some learning and time. Go ahead, take a look and see what is out there about yourself before you blather on about all this not being public. Gutenberg and I have given you some pointers towards the type of places to find this stuff, it is not that hard. It can sometimes be tedious and time consuming since the bulk of records are still not online and have to be examined in person at the offices where they are kept.

The man made suddenly famous as Joe the Plumber now seems to be capitalizing on his newfound fame. Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher has signed with a Nashville publicist and manager and is being advised by country artist Aaron Tippin. Bigger plans seem to be afoot for the man elevated to fame by appearances with both presidential candidates. A book is in the works, speaking appearances are planned and word is that he may pursue recording country music. As first reported in a CMT.com blog, Joe the Plumber signed with Nashville PR firm The Press Office on Tippin's recommendation and then aligned with management firm Bobby Roberts Company.

I'm amazed at how cavalier people are with other people's money. As though Americans should be PENALIZED because they're able to make MORE than $250,000. A "success tax" is anathema to The American Dream.

Some argue the point that Joe didn't have the resources and ability to purchase the company, is that a relevant point? How many Americans don't have the resources to own the homes they currently occupy? Not to mention the thousands of Americans caught up in the mortgage crises. We are a nation of dreamers who live beyond our means.

Taxation because you're success is ridiculous. Why not just have a Black Tax? If you're a certain ethnic group, why not tax them as a group as well?

McCain has stated he won't raise taxes. Obama said he's going to raise taxes on the "rich." He's implied that this will somehow ease the tax burden on everyone else. But they're not saying their going to REDUCE our taxes. How about REDUCING our taxes? How about reducing our government spending? How about reducing the size of our government?

Based on what you wrote, I would believe that you support zero taxes for the highest earners. Or maybe you support a flat tax of $5,000 for everyone with a job. That way, no one would be paying more or less taxes than anyone else. Your statements are so vague, that one could interpret them any way.

Who is increasing taxes? Who is decreasing taxes? On whom are they being increased of decreased.

Obama is calling for a repeal of the Bush tax cuts. Is that an increase, a decrease, or no change?

If you make more money, you pay more taxes. There is no way around it without a really good accountant and some off-shore accounts. Is that how you define "penalizing success"? Some call it paying your fair share.

Wow - I had no idea that wealthy/well off people weren't supposed to pay taxes like the rest of us poor schlubs. Who knew? I always thought if you earned more money that you paid more taxes. Do I feel stoopid now...
