I was under the impression that Amtrak's service was less than stellar. Having the inauguration delayed because the Capitol Limited hit a cow in Indiana would be unacceptable.

I believe he is flying into Philadelphia.
He wants to retrace the route that Abraham Lincoln took before his own inauguration, from Philadelphia through Baltimore and on to Washington. Of course Lincoln was forced to pass through Baltimore in the middle of the night because of rioting Southern sympathizers--something Obama won't have to emulate.
He will give a speech in Baltimore, I think at the Ravens' stadium. Fort McHenry would have been nice and a historic site and all, but there is only one road in, and traffic would have been unmanageable.
Plans are not yet entirely set.

GM may not have his new missle-proof Caddy ready yet.
better photo ops than airport tarmacs
and it's the last leg of a Lincoln emulation.
Lincoln started in Springfield and made 100 speeches along the way.
Picking up Biden along the way and taking the train really should make great press.

There is no direct Amtrak route between Chicago and Philly. He would have to go to DC, transfer to a train for Philly, then turn around and come back.

I think it would be neat if there was a direct route from Philly to Chicago. Better yet, from Baltimore to Chicago. I love to ride the train.

Not an original idea but an emulation for effect
The President-elect, Vice President-elect and their families will travel – via railroad — to Washington, D.C. on Saturday, January 17th and host events along the way in Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore. The trip marks the final leg of a journey that began on the steps of the Old State Capitol in Illinois and will culminate on the steps of the United States Capitol. …
Abraham Lincoln’s famed trip from Springfield to Washington in 1861 was a dangerous one, as history shows. One of the more telling stories about the type of man Lincoln was is the the fact that in preparation for the journey he roped his own trunks and labeled them ” A. Lincoln, The White House, Washington, D.C.” In spite of the dangers to the journey there was also great excitement over the new President-elect as this story from Peekskill, New York proves.
