Install/re-install Rosetta?

I previously asked about issues I was having with older apps not launching on one Intel Mac but working fine on another:

One of the helpful responses asked if I had Rosetta installed.
I'm now addressing this problem again, and need to know how one would determine if, in fact, Rosetta is or is not installed?

And if it's not installed, how can it be?

There is probably a faster way to do this, but

open up Applications. Select top app in list. Do command-option-i for get info (persistent.)

Scroll down through the list. If you see that any apps are (PowerPC) try to open them. If you have Rosetta installed, it will work. If you don't, it will ask you if you want to install it.

You are having the same problem, on the same computer that you already installed Rosetta? Rosetta is installed by default on Tiger and Leopard. It is an optional installation on Snow Leopard.

Should have mentioned this initially; I'm running OS 10.5.8, not Snow Leopard.
It was a full install of Leopard, so Rosetta should have been installed automatically (shouldn't it?)

Some say "Application (PowerPC)" some just say "Application"
The only message upon their failed launch says "The application .... quit unexpectedly" and I'm not getting asked if I want to install Rosetta. :banghead:

I think the question is what is the impact of saying yes to installing Rosetta? Does it slow everything down? Does it install 22gb worth of necessary files? Does it make the Mac unstable? Does it glow in the dark?

As I said, I'm running Leopard, not Snow Leopard, and "saying yes to installing Rosetta" is not an option (unless you know how to do it after Leopard is already installed.)

Try a different User account on the Mac with the crashes. Then run those apps. If no crashes, the problem is in the Preferences for those apps in your normal user account. Drag those prefs to the Desktop and try the apps again. The apps will make new preferences.

You could also try a Safe boot of that Mac, which fixes stuff during startup. Takes 3 times as long to boot to login window. Then just select Restart and try those apps again.
