Linksys problem

My son, in NYC, called and said they (his roomie and he) were having a problem getting wireless set up in their apt. They have a modem from the cable co. and that works. But they can't get the linksys router or the Apple router to work. He says that neither of their machines can read the Linksys CD that came with the unit.

I realize this is a goofy second hand question and I don't have all the facts at hand,but maybe someone has had a problem with or special insight into the linksys connection procedure?

If they have an Apple router, they should be able to use Airport setup assistant to get the Apple router (Airport Express or Extreme I assume) to work. I can't see why they would need a Linksys CD for an Apple router.

And it probably wouldn't hurt to restart the Mac on a regular basis. WH

When I swapped out my buffalo for an AEBS, it didn't show up on my wireless Macs until they were restarted. That's not supposed to be how it goes, yet...

You don't need the Linksys CD if you are on a Mac and setting up a Linksys router. Just go to http://192.168.1.1 and enter the default passwords in the quick start guide. The CD doesn't install anything it just walks you through the setup like an Assistant.

1) Restart the cable modem. Many cable modems "lock" to the initial ethernet address they see. This will prevent them from communicating with any other machine until the cable modem is reset.

2) Skip the CD. Plug either machine into the linksys via ethernet. you should be connected to the internet now. if not, go to http://192.168.1.1 to change the settings on your router.

3. Change the password on the Linksys from the default while setting it up, it is well known by hackers. While at it, they might also want to disable management access to the router through a wireless connection, a wired conenction is more secure.

Restart/reset it by unplugging it for a few minutes.
