iPhone roaming abroad (e.g. Canada)
#1
okay im in canada and im officially roaming.
I have not turned on data roaming access in the settings on the
iphone, so I thought that was enough...

so when i switched my phone off of airplane mode
(no wifi or 3G) i started getting Facebook notices on my
SMS. I quickly turned back to airplane mode so to not
incur costs on SMS messaging abroad..

To truly be free of roaming charges, is it best to stay in
airplane mode, or will the sms messages be within the
standard plan as is in the US for unlimited messaging?

Im worried im going to get charged extra for getting
SMS messages while in Canada.

Fortuneately i have a laptop to write and check messages with

YOu can run Airplane mode and then turn on Wifi---this way you can use wifi for data at cafes etc and not incur roaming charges.

Some notes I made while using the phone in London from another post here a few months back. You may find answers to your specific questions in the two links towards the end of the post...

******************************************

A co-worker loaned me a phone to buy a SIM card for. I used that for local calls in London last June. I did not use the loaner phone for local calls the day I went over to Paris.

For the very few long distance calls I made (in London & Paris back to the USA), I did use the iPhone. I paid $6 for one month to get the Long Distance Plan rates which wasn't that much cheaper (I think it was $1.29 without the plan, $0.99 with the plan).

I enabled WiFi where I could to retrieve email and check on internet for stuff. For email, I turned PUSH feature to OFF while I was there. I kept the Airplane Mode enabled unless I wanted to make a call.

If you get any data pushed while you are there without a plan, I believe the charge is $20/MB -- so be careful. I reset my data stats to zero to keep an eye on data income/outgoing, I was successful in keeping that to zero. (It was my understanding that incoming texts and voice mail was a hit against data? Not sure about that.)
