I have the smaller original Surf version of that EeePC. That is a good price.

What's the appeal for these? Is it because they are smaller, lighter, easier to carry?

This is not the Eee you want unless you are only shopping price. The Atom units are nicer. Such as the Eee PC 901. More expensive though.

The Eee units seems less expensive overall compared to the Dell Mini 9. My 901 came with 802.11n, Bluetooth, 6 cell battery, 1.3 MP web camera, 1 GB RAM, 4 GB SSD boot drive and 16 GB SSD storage drive. Less than $300. I bought the white 901 Linux model for $280 (minus the $40+ I had left on my Amazon gift card so my total was even less). The stock Xandros distro is lackluster, but works for the basics (web, skype, google docs, chat, etc.)

Eee web storage is a nice perk. My unit has 18 months free of 20GB web storage that I can share, set up slideshows, or simply just use as cloud storage. I can upload from any browser, so even my Macs can upload and download files (assuming I sign in via the web interface).

Ubuntu is probably better than Xandros, but I'm not a fan of the Dell mini pricepoint or hardware. I don't get it. Seems other similar systems, say Asus 901 or Lenovo S10 (yes I know it's a bigger form factor, but still) have more features and/or a lower price. The Dell Mini seems nice enough, but I don't have the intestinal fortitude to spend every waking hour waiting for Dell coupons and trolling the clearance site.

I don't care if I can run OS X. Simply not an issue for me at all. For those who would care about this functionality, it does seem possible depending on which Eee you purchase.

Can't you put any linux distro you want on there?

Yeah, but I haven't bothered. The Ubuntu Netbook remix should work nicely, but I've never tried it.
