Anyone own a Volvo XC90?
#11
The new volvo c30 sure is a neat little car, with the p1800es glass hatchback deal. I don't know why volvos have the image they do (liberal cars, esp. the 240 series), but they've made some interesting cars over the years, so I can see being a fan. They've made some fast cars too. My in-laws have a S60R, and it's pretty quick. They also have a xc90 (t5, I believe), and they like it. They're scandihoovian, so they're a little biased in favor of saabs and volvos. kj.

One of the curious offspring of Ford's purchase of Volvo is the Taurus X (formerly the Freestyle). It shares the same basic design as the XC90 although it has been stretched enough to give it a decent 3rd seat and storage. It is much less expensive than the Volvo and much more reliable.
It's main draw back is that it is not nearly as attractive as the XC90.
I have a Freestyle and it has been a very good car and completely reliable.

I have been eyeing the Freestyles and like them. Did the Freestyles ever have side curtain airbags or only the Taurus X?

Also, what is your MPG like?

Although they seem like OK cars, I don't understand the Volvo lust at all.

Lust might be a little strong, but we do seem to come back to Volvos. I'm guessing it's more of a familiarity thing. I learned to drive in a girlfriend's 240, first car I owned was an 850T and now enjoy a drop top C70. I can certainly see why some wouldn't care for them.

jdc,

What didn't you like about the Highlander? (It's the only one of the group we haven't driven). Neither of us cared much for the Pilot so it's off the list. The MDX was nice but the dealer was horrible which may have tainted the experience a bit. It also reminded us a lot of the Lexus RX300 we had...a fine competent car but sort of bleh. The RX was also severely underpowered which is one of my concerns with the XC90 but it sounds like it was adequate for you. Thanks for the insight
