Okay. I think you may have talked me out of getting a zoom with such a long range, but I think I would still like a zoom.
The speed isn't so vital, given that I will primarily use this for outdoor photography. I still want the wide-angle aspect for landscape-type photography.
I'd still like to keep it in the sub-$500 range.
The above mentioned Tamron 28-75 seems to fit:

As far as normal lenses, one of the articles referenced by deckeda, said that for a dSLR, one would want a 35mm lens instead of a 50mm. I only see one fixed non-50mm lens (at least for Canon) and that is a Sigma 30mm lens:
