I bought a Panny 42" plasma 720p April of '08 for $899 and we have been very, very pleased with it. We don't sit close enough to the TV to get a benefit from 1080p, so it was kind of a no-brainer. That said, we don't have a blu-ray player but can still see plenty of wrinkles and makeup on actors' faces.
It is also in a room with a lot of light and it's still an easy view. They have this set at Costco now, and they have the 50" as well. I doubt you could go wrong with either. I have also read good things about the Samsung and Sony sets, they are up there with Pannys and Pioneers. Pioneer being the king of the hill. Or at least it was last year.
One thing good about the LCDs is they use about half the power that plasmas use. (As of my research a year ago.) They also should put off slightly less heat than a plasma. Happy shopping!
