How do y'all survive without a broadband connection?
#1
Due to a move, we will not have our VZN DSL until the middle or the end of next week or whenever ... if we can trust Verizon's promise of prompt service delivery. Until then I have to rely on dial-up! Ugh, I am spoiled. Realized that Apple has long forsaken the technology when I tried to find the modem port on my MBP. Do'h. Luckily, I have my IBM Thinkpad R61. Those who don't own a Windows machine, what do you do to have a dial-up connection when it is the only choice at the time?

I also have a 3G modem which is 2 Mbps. Smile

When Comcast "accidentally" disconnected my Internet connection a shot time ago, I couldn't even find an open WiFi network to hop on.

I caught up on my reading.

That was what the optional USB modem from Apple was for. So few ordered it, they discontinued offering it. But it has been years since I used a modem. By this point I have probably lost most of the hard earned knowledge of getting one set up up right and trouble shooting a dial-up connection. If I did have to fall back to using a modem, I do have several older Macs with modems or modem ports. I could set up a dial up connection with one and pass it through to my home network. It does not take much CPU power to share the connection.

I have an Airport with a modem built in and my D-Link router can use an external modem as a fall back as well.

Of course, I hope never to have to use either for my internet connection.

I guess if it got to that point, I'd hack my cellphone and connect that way... just don't tell Verizon.

My computer is so old that it has a modem, but I don't have access to dial up. I was thinking about that when trying to decide whether or not to take my computer on my trip into the boonies. It'll be staying home, because a couple of those places where I'll be staying have never heard of wifi. But I am going to survive a week without a computer. I will! I will!

I benefit greatly from having high-speed internet at home, but it's also kind of freeing to not have access to a computer or high-speed internet from time to time. Makes me really enjoy the non-wired parts of our world that much more.

And NetZero thinks anyone wants to go back to dial-up:banghead:? DSL's a PIA, but it's still cheaper than cable service.

Strike up a discussion with your neighbor. At some point, mention what a pain it is to be with out a broadband connection. At this point, they will hopefully offer you access to their wireless connection (if they have one).

My neighbor did this when I was moving out, even though access wasn't my goal.
