Yeah, the kids. When ours were very young and the grandparents' dog (also my dog) died, we told them she went to live at a farm and later told them she died at the farm. They now understand death and are willing to accept the dog's death. It turned out that showing them dead bugs was quite helpful in this process.

Aww.... so sorry to hear about that. Telling the kids is hard.... I usually explain that the pet was called to heaven (usually to be Grandma or Grandpa's pet), and that we're happy to have shared their life. And don't forget to console the pups.. obviously they felt that kitty was a member of the family too.
