Battlestar vs Babylon
#1
I finished rewatching BattleStar Galactica (remimagined) thanks to my local Library. Watching it in big chunnks helps. But damn is it dark.

Thanks to Netflix Streaming, I am now rewatching Babylon 5.

Thowing out the SFX (Babylon was done on Amigas for dangsake) anybody prefer the uneven, gritty drama of Battlestar to the tied together, but somewhat hokey story of Babylon?

I think the re-imagined BSG was some of the best drama I saw on TV in ages, at least in the first few seasons. The mini-series (aka the Pilot/Movie) and the first handful of episodes (specifically recalling "33") were great. I think it stumbled in the end, but for a while there I was always looking forward to the next episode to see where it went.

I didn't "discover" B5 until a few seasons in; watched it pretty solidly for a while. Been meaning to rent it from Season 1 and watch it beginning to end.

That's actually a tough one...

I still REALLY enjoy the continous story arc of B5, but BSG (despite it's descent into the weird there at the end) was pretty darn excellent.

I'm going to have to vote "no preference" because of my enjoyment of BOTH - for different reasons.

Bab5... I DESPISE "Reality Shows", and BSG was imaged almost as one of those damn wastes of time.

Besides, I prefer a good space opera.

Babylon 5 had some great actors, and I really enjoyed the multiplicity of races and cultures. And how could you not enjoy a show that brings in Penn and Teller for a guest spot?

I really, really loved the new BSG, but I have a hard time rewatching any of the episodes because I know its building towards a tremendous letdown. The ending was awful; I'd expected so much more from that crew.

It's been much debated -- anytime BSG comes up on http://www.io9.com it always descends into a discussion of disappointment -- but it's pretty much accepted that they simply painted themselves into a corner. Had they another season they might have been able to weave themselves back out, but once they decided the 4th season was it, and then they had to wrap it up, they just stumbled to it.

I still love it, though; again, some great sci-fi, terrific drama, and a well-above-par soundtrack. Bear McCreary did some damn fine work on that series.

(Not to veer off the topic, but I was discussing TV soundtracks recently, and specifically Star Trek ones. Everyone (who was even a passing fan) can recognize some TOS music (quick, "Pon Farr" fight music!) but -- beyond the theme/show titles music -- I try to think of music from TNG, DS9, VOY, or ENT, and can't.)

I've got the whole series of Babylon 5 and have been trying for several years now to get into it-- have watched (not necessarily actively) about the first 3 episodes but I can't stay interested . . .
but I'll vote for it simply because my childhood hero Billy Mumy is in it . . .

The first season was tough...it picks up on the second half and shoots upward in the 2nd 3rd and 4th seasons. The Fifth Season was a wrapup. The last 3 movies were pretty to very good.

On the Music. Well I still listen to Franke's stuff. I don't think Mccreary's stands on its own, but damn it was good on the show!

This is my favorite

BSG, just for the sound effects

Sound design by Daniel Coleman, in a studio I built for AnEfx, originally to to FX for remixes for foreign distributions of Greatest American Hero. He also does Eureka.
