OK, so I was finally able to do the extended hardware test on my iMac which has gone nuts after updating to 10.6.3. I have run DU, Tech Tools, and Disk Warrior which reported a directory issue but was reported as repaired. I had run the hardware test which reported no problems and was advised to run the extended test. So last evening I had just finished up my work for the day and crash! Grey screen; nothing else. Hard restart and figured I had the time so I ran the extended test and after 1 hour 25 minutes it reported no trouble found.
So my plan now is to archive and install back to 10.6 where I had no issues until the update.

There's no Archive and Install option in 10.6.
Instead, the installer does something similar without preserving the old System folder and...
Sorry...
It preserves your OS updates.

So I have to put up with this? Has anyone else had any issues with updating to 10.6.3? I have a commercial SL disk-can I use that to archive and install or does that preserve the updates too?
This whole episode does not seem very Apple to me. I have not had anything like this occur since OS 9. Maybe I'll try the Apple support forums. I can't believe there's no solution here.

You never identified the specific problem, right?
So 'might as well try reinstalling the OS even if it leaves you back at 10.6.4.
It'll give you a nice clean System/Library folder.

You're right but after everything I've done it seems like it has to be the software. Well, I'll just keep trying.
