10 most overpriced products you should avoid
#1
the profit made on texting has always bugged me in particular.

Who wouldn't want to save both time and money? Often, however, one comes at the expense of the other.

Convenience, for example, comes at a price. You'll pay dearly for the luxury of enjoying a candy bar from the minibar in your hotel room. Make the effort to walk out of the hotel and the price of the candy bar drops significantly. Here's WalletPop's list of the top 10 overpriced products you should avoid if you want to save money:

How about a $500 Ethernet cable.

Sheesh. Not hard things to avoid! The only one I sometimes indulge in are the precut fruits. As a single person, I'd rather pay a bit more and get a variety than have to eat watermelon every day for a week until it's gone.

#7 300% mark -up on the wine.
The meal is a bit of a mark-up, too.

#8. I've done the make your own cards thing. Especially when it was a computer novelty 20 years ago.
I've also bought the bulk cards in a box, instead of stopping by the Hallmark store.
ten dollar talking/singing cards I can pass on.

The rest (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10 ) don't see the light of day here.

I remember going to Disney World early in the decade; we stayed at one of the condos. At the little sundries store, a 2-liter bottle of Coke was $7.50.

Like I've said to the manager at the movie theater, I don't mind paying a bit of a premium but I don't like being fleeced.

My daughter (who's now 9) makes all the birthday cards I need. I get my Christmas cards here.

Yeah, I think they should have left the "to avoid" bit off of there.

1. Text messages - they're often bundled with a data plan and thus you can't just say you don't want them.
2. Bottled water - would love to see the author do this when there's no potable water around. Plus I think they forget the fact that even though the water often comes from the tap, it's purified before it goes into the bottle. Tap water [does not equal]* purified water.
3. Microwave popcorn [does not equal]* movie theater popcorn. They use different oils for one thing (and if you're thinking it's not that big of a deal, then I understand why you don't get the difference.) Really I think this one should just be "movie theater" in general.
8. Make your own greeting card and print it off your home printer vs a real greeting card. Really?
10. AD has a good point. What's the cost of all the food you don't eat because it spoiled before you could finish it?

* changed from "does not equal" symbol to avoid this:

i do most of my texting from my iPod Touch using a free app but i have to be in wifi range to do it. iPhone users have that option also and they are always connected. googlevoice also has free texting but i don't know if it will push.

i pay $5 a month for 200 texts on my cell phone. only my son and my brother text me and they know to use my cell number if they REALLY need to contact me.

Maybe dialing the phone that they already have in their hand and actually talking to the person. There is a lot more bandwidth in a 1 minute verbal conversation than a dozen texts back and forth, and it takes a lot less time.

Text is like telegraphs and Morse Code, which was replaced by a better communication technology, the Telephone.
