I only have a 1080i tv, that I bought on Black Friday of 2006.
Was wondering what the difference would be if I bought a BluRay Player vs 1080p.

I'm curious about this too.
I will tell you that 1080p content (such as a Blu-ray or HD-DVD) will look so much better on a 720p set (or at least it does in the case of my Samsung PN50A450 plasma) than 720p content. I've verified this with both 1080i broadcast content and 1080p video downloaded from the Internet.

Unless you have a FREAKIN' HUGE TV (larger than 50" ), odds are you won't be able to tell the difference.

It will work and look fine. The TV will likely be able to scale the resolution down, but if not make sure the player can send 1080i signals. One tip is that 1080P can only be sent over HDMI, so if you use component, you'll max out at 1080i

The TV will interlace the 1080p signal from the BD player. Resolution will remain the same, but you may experience increase rate of jaggies.

I will tell you that I recently purchased a 720p projector that will do the 1080i. I played AVATAR on DVD for a certain scene and then I played it over Bluray and was BLOWN AWAY at how much better the detail was. Now, this was on a 92" diagonal screen. The bluray is just crisper - especially with movies using a lot of special effects.

I heard it has better resolution than a BluRay VHS.

We use our playstation 3 on 1080i because there is a common sync problem that prevents it from working right in 1080p with some tvs (even some sonys). It works for short periods on 1080p, but I can't tell the difference, and neither can anyone else I've talked to, so we just run it 1080i. I seriously don't think there's much, if any, difference. kj.
